Stockholm -- The Assyrian presence has not been absent from the electoral scene in Sweden. Rather, it has been present, active, and influential, with considerable popularity at the parliamentary and municipal levels.

After the victory of three Suroye politicians, Ilan De Basso (Social Democratic Party), Roger Haddad (Liberals), and Paul Sabo (Christian Democratic Party) as members of the Swedish Parliament in 13 September elections, reports indicated that Yusuf Aydin will also take a seat in parliament, albeit as an alternate member for a government minister, and as a member of Committee on European Union Affairs and the Swedish delegation to the Nordic Council.

At the municipal level, Leader of the Christian Family Party Assyrian politician Aday BethKinne announced the conclusion of the vote-counting process, which resulted in him receiving 1821 votes and his party breaking the record in the Swedish municipality of Botkyrka by winning 4 seats.

In Gothenburg, the municipal elections resulted in Assyrian candidate Aslan Akbas receiving one of the highest vote shares, but the election was not decided because no candidate achieved the required majority. Accordingly, Akbas will enter a second round of elections to obtain the position of Gothenburg mayor.

These results add to the existing presence of the Assyrian community in Swedish political life. The community is estimated at about 150000 people, with large numbers concentrated in Södertälje, Örebro, Gothenburg, and parts of Stockholm.

Suroye institutions have also organized campaigns for greater recognition of the history and culture of the Assyrian people in Sweden, including efforts to raise awareness of the 1915 Sayfo Genocide.
