
The visiting delegation included three Yezidi MPs. The meeting addressed the historical ties between Christians and Yezidis, as well as the shared challenges both peoples have faced in recent years. Both the Yezidi and Assyrian peoples endured persecution, displacement, killings and massacres at the hands of the Islamic State (ISIS) during its control over large swathes of Iraq, in particular Mosul and Shigur (Sinjar). They also discussed ways to enhance cooperation and coordination to serve social stability and protect the legitimate rights of both peoples.
Patriarch Nona emphasized the importance of brotherhood and solidarity, stressing the need for unified positions and voice to serve Iraq and its indigenous components. The Yezidi delegation commended Patriarch Nona's message and vision supporting peaceful coexistence among Iraq's various components, praising the humanitarian role the Church has played in supporting displaced persons and those affected during Iraq many crises. The Yezidi delegation extended a formal invitation to Patriarch Nona to visit Shigur (Sinjar) and meet with Yezidi community members, reaffirming the strong ties between the two sides and their commitment to strengthening bonds of cooperation and communication.
The meeting reflected both sides' commitment to enhancing community partnership and embedding coexistence, at a time when Iraq's diverse components are seeking greater cooperation to preserve pluralism and support stability in the country.
