Fairfield, Australia -- The Assyrian community will be out in force this Sunday to celebrate the Assyrian New Year.

The community regards the Assyrian New Year as the most important national festival handed down from history.

Most New Year celebrations focus on family and friends and are a time to reflect on the past, envisage a future and to remember those affected by unrest in Iraq.

More than 10,000 people are expected to attend the celebrations which will run from 10am to 10pm at Fairfield Showground with the official opening at 2.30pm.

The event will feature a large variety of traditional dancing and songs including entertainment by eight Assyrian singers, non-stop traditional dancing, food, displays, games and fireworks at 8.30pm.

This is the fifth year Assyrian New Year has been celebrated in Fairfield and everyone in the community is encouraged to attend.
